[2023 Excellence in Reading Management Certification] Books as the Key to Developing Talent in SMEs

There is nothing new under the sun, and the path forward for every company can be found written in books somewhere in the world. The vast history of human knowledge in books may make it challenging to find the right words for a specific need, but encouraging employees to read collectively and discuss ideas can yield extraordinary results. From a company's perspective, reading fosters talent development, enhances employee well-being, strengthens corporate competitiveness, and promotes community involvement by sharing reading infrastructure.

Alpha Brothers’ focus on reading management has a clear motivation. As the company grew and expanded into diverse roles such as design, marketing, and development, it faced hiring challenges. Recognizing that top talent often overlooked SMEs, Alpha Brothers implemented a strategy of growth through shared reading to develop both the organization and its employees. The company now has a process in place to nurture leaders, such as team managers, through guided reading programs. While Alpha Brothers had long emphasized reading in its operations, it only recently participated in the certification program upon recommendation from the Ministry of Employment and Labor.

Alpha Brothers operates as an accelerator company, supporting startups with services like business planning, design, marketing, and legal assistance. While it has not previously advocated for reading management to other businesses, the certification marks a shift in its approach. The company now intends to actively recommend the practice to others. Having experienced the tangible benefits of reading, Alpha Brothers is poised to become a significant contributor to the widespread adoption of reading management, sharing its power with more companies.

Q. How did you come to know about and apply for the certification program?
We were initially participating in the Ministry of Employment and Labor’s Work-Life Balance campaign, during which the ministry recommended our company for the Reading Management Certification. That’s how we decided to join the program.

Q. You’ve been practicing reading management for some time. What programs do you have in place?
We run a variety of reading culture activities, including operating an in-house library, hosting book clubs, organizing workshops, and engaging in community cultural activities. These initiatives reinforce our commitment to reading management, helping us set goals and pursue our vision.

Q. Can you share details about your in-house library?
Our library currently holds approximately 1,500 books. We’ve built a management process using Notion, a program widely used by SMEs for note-taking, documentation, and database management. Through this platform, employees can not only borrow books but also request purchases.

Q. What external activities do you organize?
In 2022, we conducted virtual online lectures for local residents in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, attracting around 70 participants. In 2023, we plan to collaborate with the Gayang 3-dong Community Center to open our in-house library to the public. This effort aims to promote the company while fostering a culture of reading in the local community.

Q. Has reading management positively impacted company performance?
Yes, particularly in talent development. Through reading management, we’ve established a process to nurture team leaders in each division. Employees who aspire to leadership positions, such as team managers, undergo a development process rooted in reading. We also have detailed plans to extend this initiative to leadership training.

Q. As an accelerator, do you recommend reading management to the companies you support?
Previously, we didn’t, but now that we’ve earned this certification, we plan to actively recommend it in the future.

Q. What are your thoughts on receiving this certification?
It’s a great honor to have competed with so many other companies. As an SME, we are deeply grateful for this opportunity. Using this certification as a foundation, we aim to promote reading not only within our community but also among other SMEs. We’ll continue to work hard.

Q. Any advice for companies looking to apply for the certification?
First and foremost, you need books. Books are the key to reading management. Without them, it’s almost impossible to qualify for certification. Beyond that, if you establish a library and use it as a basis for hosting book clubs, you’ll be in a strong position to apply.

Q. You emphasize the importance of physical books. Is digital content also valid?
While physical books are important, digital books are increasingly being used. Platforms like Millie’s Library for audiobooks or e-libraries could also qualify. In this digital era, applications offering e-books complement physical books, and managing such resources internally can help secure certification.
